What is Alpha-Gal Syndrome?

Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is a serious, often misunderstood allergy to a sugar molecule called galactose-α-1,3-galactose, commonly called alpha-gal. This sugar is found in the meat and other products made from mammals, including beef, pork, lamb, venison, goat, and sometimes even exotic meats. It’s also hidden in many everyday products you might not expect, including medications, supplements, and skin care.

How Does Someone Get It?

Most cases are caused by the bite of a lone star tick or, in some regions, other tick species. When a tick bites, it can transfer alpha-gal into your body. Your immune system may then start recognizing that sugar molecule as a threat, leading to allergic reactions whenever you consume or come into contact with mammal-derived ingredients.

What It Means for Daily Life

Living with AGS means you have to be careful not just about what’s on your plate, but also what’s in the products you use on your body. This includes:

  • Food: All mammalian meats, broths, fats, and gelatin
